CVE-2026-5144
8.8Boone Gorges · BuddyPress Groupblog
The BuddyPress Groupblog plugin for WordPress is susceptible to privilege escalation due to improper authorization checks in the group blog settings handler, allowing authenticated users to gain admin rights.
Executive summary
The BuddyPress Groupblog plugin for WordPress contains a critical privilege escalation vulnerability that allows authenticated users to gain administrator access to the entire multisite network.
Vulnerability
This is an improper privilege management flaw (CWE-269) where the plugin fails to validate user-supplied parameters in the group blog settings handler. An authenticated attacker with Subscriber-level access or higher can inject malicious roles and network blog associations to escalate their privileges to Administrator.
Business impact
Successful exploitation of this vulnerability results in full administrative control over the WordPress multisite network. This allows an attacker to modify site content, access sensitive user data, install malicious plugins, or effectively compromise the entire server environment. With a CVSS score of 8.8, this flaw represents a high-severity risk to business continuity and data integrity.
Remediation
Immediate Action: There is currently no patched version available to resolve this vulnerability. Administrators should immediately deactivate or uninstall the BuddyPress Groupblog plugin until a secure update is released by the developer.
Proactive Monitoring: Review WordPress user account logs for suspicious account modifications or unexpected additions of administrative users. Monitor for anomalous traffic patterns directed at the group blog settings endpoints.
Compensating Controls: Deploy a Web Application Firewall (WAF) with rules configured to block unauthorized requests containing the groupblog-blogid or default-member parameters. Ensure that file integrity monitoring is active on the WordPress installation to detect unauthorized code changes.
Exploitation status
Public Exploit Available: Unknown
Analyst recommendation
Given the severity of this privilege escalation flaw, immediate action is required to protect the integrity of the WordPress network. Organizations using the BuddyPress Groupblog plugin must prioritize deactivating the component until an official security patch is confirmed and deployed. Failure to do so leaves the multisite network exposed to total administrative takeover by any authenticated user.
